This type of communication has been around since the early days of radio and has been used for a variety of purposes over the years. In recent years it has become increasingly popular due to its ability to reach long distances without requiring line-of-sight or direct contact with an antenna tower or base station. HF can be used for both military and civilian purposes such as broadcasting, navigation, and data transmission. History The first use of HF radio was by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 when he sent an experimental signal across the Atlantic Ocean from England to Newfoundland using Morse code at 17 kHz. Since then HF radio has been widely used for many different types of communications including maritime shipping, aviation communications, amateur radio broadcasting, two-way voice communications between ships at sea or aircrafts in flight and more recently satellite communications services such as Iridium .
