The Battle of Julu was a battle fought between the forces of the warlord Xiang Yu and the forces of the Qin dynasty in 207 BC near present-day Pingxiang, in western Hebei province. The battle pitted Xiang Yu, one of the last leaders of a coalition formed to overthrow the Qin dynasty, against an army led by Zhang Han, a former general under Emperor Qin Shi Huang. The battle began when Zhang Han’s army encircled Xiang Yu’s forces at Julu and cut off their supplies. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Xiang Yu’s troops managed to break through Zhang Han’s lines after three days of fighting. During this time, Xiang Yu employed various strategies such as sending out smaller groups to fight their way back into camp or using catapults to launch flaming arrows over enemy walls. Eventually, after months of siege warfare and several failed attempts by both sides to breach each other's defenses, Xiang Yu finally emerged victorious when his troops managed to take control of an enemy stronghold. This allowed him to open up supply lines and gain access to much needed food and supplies for his troops. The victory at Julu was seen as one of the greatest military victories in Chinese history due to its sheer scale and strategic importance for both sides involved in the conflict.
