The digital divide, also known as the “digital split” or the “information divide”, is a term that describes the gap between those with access to modern technology and those without. It can be seen in terms of geographical locations (urban vs. rural), income levels (rich vs. poor), age (elderly vs. youth) and even gender (male vs. female). It can refer to access to Internet services, computer hardware, software applications and other digital tools necessary for successful participation in today’s information-driven economy. The digital divide is an issue of social justice that needs to be addressed in order for all people to have equal opportunities in our increasingly technological world.
