The Spring Festival is the most important festival in China. It usually falls on the first day of the first lunar month, and this year it will be on February 5th. During the Spring Festival, people get together to have a reunion dinner and watch fireworks. Families also clean their houses to sweep away bad luck and welcome good luck in for the new year. People decorate their homes with paper cuttings, couplets, Chinese knots, lanterns and other decorations that symbolize good fortune. On New Year's Eve, people stay up late until midnight to greet the coming of a new year with fireworks and firecrackers. People also exchange gifts during this time of celebration such as money in red envelopes for children or gifts among family members or friends. They often share delicious food such as dumplings which symbolize wealth and prosperity for all family members in the new year. The Spring Festival is an occasion for everyone to be reunited with their families after being apart from each other throughout the whole year due to work or study commitments. This is why it’s a very special time for Chinese people who are living both inside and outside of China!
