Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is the second smallest planet in our Solar System. It is known as the Red Planet because it appears red when viewed from Earth. Mars has two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, which were discovered by Asaph Hall in 1877.
Mars has a thin atmosphere made up mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon gases. This atmosphere provides some protection against radiation from space but not enough to support life on its own. The surface of Mars is mostly covered with dust and rocks with a few large impact craters visible. The temperatures on Mars range from -125 degrees Celsius at night to 20 degrees Celsius during the day, making it a very cold place!
The average distance between Earth and Mars is about 225 million kilometers or 140 million miles. It takes about 8 months for a spacecraft to travel between Earth and Mars so any mission must be carefully planned in order to make sure all necessary supplies are available for astronauts who will make this long journey!
Mars has been explored by several robotic probes sent by various countries including the United States, Russia, India, Japan, China and Europe. These probes have returned valuable data about the planet’s environment that could help us better understand if there was ever life on Mars or if it could support human life one day!
