The world is full of amazing things and events that can leave us in awe and wonder. One such event is the annual migration of monarch butterflies. Every year, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the United States and Canada to spend the winter in Mexico. This incredible journey takes them thousands of miles, sometimes over 20,000 miles round trip!
To prepare for this long journey, monarchs need to build up reserves of fat so they can survive their long flight. To do this they feed on nectar from flowers along their route. When they reach Mexico, they settle in oyamel fir trees located in a small area known as the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Here they will remain until March when it’s time to begin their return trip northward.
What makes this migration even more remarkable is that no single butterfly makes the entire journey! Instead, each generation takes its turn flying part of the way before passing on its knowledge to future generations who will complete the rest of the journey. This means that some butterflies may fly as far as 3,000 miles while others may only travel a few hundred miles before passing away and leaving it to their offspring to finish what they started!
The monarch butterfly migration is truly an amazing event that continues to amaze us year after year with its beauty and complexity. It’s a reminder that nature still has many secrets waiting for us to discover!
