Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini, commonly known as Lionel Messi, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. He is often considered the best player in the world and widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He made his competitive debut aged 17 in October 2004 and established himself as an integral player for the club within the next three years, finishing 2007 as a finalist for both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year award, a feat he repeated the following year. His first uninterrupted campaign came in 2008–09, during which he helped Barcelona achieve their first-ever treble by winning La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League titles. He won three consecutive FIFA Ballons d'Or from 2009 to 2011 – becoming one of four players to win three consecutive Ballons d'Or – and again finished runner-up in 2012 before winning it again in 2015. In total he has won six Ballons d'Or awards – more than any other player in history – five European Golden Shoes including four consecutively from 2011 to 2014, four European Golden Shoe awards including two consecutively from 2017 to 2018; seven La Liga titles; six Copas del Rey; eight Supercopas de España; four UEFA Champions Leagues; three UEFA Super Cups; two Club World Cups; two Olympic gold medals with Argentina U23s making him one of only two men (the other being Brazilian legend Pelé) to have won multiple international titles with different teams at senior level. Off the field Messi has been involved with various charity projects throughout his career including donating €1 million to UNICEF after winning his first Ballon d'Or award in 2009. He also supports humanitarian causes through his foundation which works towards providing access to education and health care for vulnerable children around the world.
