Climate Change and Wetland Change Abstract Climate change has become one of the most pressing issues in the world today. It is not only affecting our environment but also the health of our planet. This paper explores how climate change is impacting wetland ecosystems, and what can be done to mitigate these effects. It examines how changes in temperature, precipitation, and sea level are adversely impacting wetlands, as well as how human activities are further exacerbating these impacts. Finally, it provides an overview of potential solutions to help protect and restore wetland ecosystems in the face of climate change. Introduction Climate change has become one of the most pressing issues facing humanity today. Its effects are wide-reaching and have far-reaching implications for both people and nature alike. One area that is particularly vulnerable to climate change is wetlands – fragile ecosystems that provide numerous benefits to humans such as water filtration, flood control, carbon sequestration, habitat for wildlife species, recreation opportunities, and more (EPA 2019). Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors including rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, sea level rise (SLR), land use changes caused by human activities such as agriculture or urbanization – wetlands around the world are being degraded or destroyed at an alarming rate (Gill et al., 2018). Temperature Changes One effect of climate change on wetland ecosystems is increased temperatures. Rising temperatures can cause a variety of adverse impacts on wetlands including increased evaporation rates which can lead to decreased water levels (Bates et al., 2017). This decrease in water levels can cause a shift in species composition since many wetland plants require specific water depths for optimal growth (Gill et al., 2018). Warmer temperatures can also increase rates of decomposition which leads to higher concentrations of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus entering into waterways from runoff or leaching from soils (Bates et al., 2017). These elevated nutrient levels can lead to eutrophication – an overabundance of nutrients that causes algae blooms which deplete oxygen levels in waterways leading to fish kills (EPA 2019). Precipitation Changes Changes in precipitation patterns due to climate change also have adverse impacts on wetland ecosystems. For example, extreme weather events such as floods or droughts can cause significant damage by altering hydrological regimes which affects species composition within a given system (Gill et al., 2018). In addition, changes in precipitation patterns may lead to increased runoff which carries pollutants into waterways leading to further degradation or destruction (Bates et al., 2017). Sea Level Rise Another major concern related to climate change is sea level rise (SLR) due its potential impacts on coastal wetlands around the world. SLR occurs when ocean waters expand due increasing global temperatures causing them take up more space along coastlines leading flooding low-lying areas including marshes and swamps near shorelines(EPA 2019 ). In addition SLR may result saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems affecting species composition since some organisms cannot tolerate high salinity levels(Gill et al.,2018 ). Human Activities Human activities have further exacerbated these already existing problems by contributing additional sources pollution via runoff from agricultural fields ,urban areas ,and other sources .In addition land use changes caused by deforestation ,urbanization ,and other human activities have resulted loss habitat for many species associated with wetlands .These losses combined with other effects caused by climate change have led rapid declines biodiversity within many wetland systems around world . Solutions Fortunately there are number steps that be taken help mitigate these effects .For example measures reducing pollution from agricultural fields urban areas should implemented prevent contaminants entering into nearby waterways .In addition efforts conserve remaining natural habitats should undertaken ensure they remain intact future generations enjoy their benefits .Finally restoration projects should conducted restore degraded wetlands back their original states before damage was inflicted them through human activities or natural processes like SLR . Conclusion In conclusion it clear that climate change having deleterious effects on wetlands around world through its influence temperature precipitation patterns SLR land use changes caused humans .Fortunately there steps we take help protect restore these vital ecosystems face this growing threat however much still needs done ensure they remain viable future generations enjoy same benefits they offer us today .
