The Zijin Armed Uprising, also known as the "Zijin Rebellion", was a peasant uprising that occurred in Guangxi Province in 1851. It was led by an ethnic Yao leader named Yang Xiuqing, who claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and promised to drive out all foreign powers from China. He attracted thousands of followers from all over Guangxi Province, most of whom were poor peasants who were suffering from poverty and exploitation. The uprising lasted for nearly two years and caused great destruction in Guangxi Province. The rebels attacked local government offices, destroyed churches and foreign settlements, killed many foreigners and Chinese Christians, burned books printed with Western characters, looted property and murdered anyone who opposed them or refused to join their cause. In response to the rebellion, the Qing government sent troops to suppress it but failed due to lack of coordination between different military forces. Eventually, Yang Xiuqing was captured by Qing forces in 1853 and executed along with his followers. Although it ultimately failed in its goal of overthrowing the Qing Dynasty, the Zijin Armed Uprising had a profound impact on Chinese society at that time. It showed that even poor peasants could challenge powerful authorities if they had a strong leader like Yang Xiuqing who could inspire them with his vision and courage. It also demonstrated how much hatred there was among ordinary people towards foreign powers which were seen as exploiting China's resources for their own gain without any regard for local people's welfare or interests. In conclusion, although it ultimately failed in its goal of overthrowing the Qing Dynasty，the Zijin Armed Uprising still has an important place in Chinese history as an example of how ordinary people can challenge powerful authorities when united under a strong leader with a shared vision or cause .
